“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: ‘They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”
2 Corinthians 9:7-9
Paul writes to the Corinthians about a collection for the Jerusalem believers, and in these verses he moves the focus from external pressure to the posture of the heart. He urges each person to decide beforehand what to give, so that the gift is planned, prayerful, and free rather than the product of guilt or coercion. The apostle also frames giving within the larger biblical pattern of sowing and reaping: generous giving is not merely an obligation but a spiritual practice that trusts God to multiply what is offered and to supply every need. Paul’s point is pastoral and practical, when we give from a grateful, cheerful heart, our generosity becomes a means by which God works in the world and brings thanksgiving to him. Give from the heart, do not give reluctantly or under compulsion, and trust God to provide and multiply. These are not rules to manipulate God but invitations to align our motives with the character of the Giver.
Dear Blessed Lord Jesus, teach me to give from a heart that has already decided to trust you. Remove reluctance and compulsion from my motives and fill me with the joy of generosity. Multiply what I offer so it meets real need and brings glory to your name. Make my giving a sign of your provision and a channel of thanksgiving. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
