“Jesus Teaches”

“And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Mark 9:35

Jesus addresses a dispute among the disciples about who is greatest and teaches that kingdom greatness is humility expressed in service. He sits (the rabbinic posture of teaching) and tells the Twelve that anyone who wants to be first must become last and a servant of all, making service the defining mark of leadership. In first‑century Jewish culture children and the powerless had low social status, so Jesus’ example (In Mark Chapters 9–10 he places a child among them. Jesus places a child among the disciples to show what the kingdom values: dependence, humility, and welcome. Children in that culture had little status, so Jesus’ action reverses expectations, he honors vulnerability and teaches that receiving the least is the way to receive him. True discipleship looks like open hands and a welcoming heart, not ambition or rank.) deliberately elevates humility and dependence as kingdom virtues. The word translated servant (Greek diakonos) evokes hands‑on, attendant service, practical care rather than mere title. This overturns common measures of greatness like rank, honor, or public acclaim.

True greatness in God’s kingdom looks nothing like the world’s scoreboard. Jesus calls us to trade ambition for humility and status for service. When we choose the low place and serve others without seeking praise, we reflect the heart of Christ and open ourselves to the life he gives. Small acts of care done with a servant’s heart shape communities and reveal God’s reign more than any public title.

My new thoughts today:

Who in my life needs practical help this week?

Where can I choose the last place instead of the first?

How will serving quietly change my motives and relationships?

Dear Blessed Lord Jesus, teach me to be last and to serve. Soften my pride and give me eyes to see the needs around me. Fill my hands with simple acts of love and my heart with joy in serving without reward. Make my life a quiet echo of Your humility and a witness to your kingdom. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Your Precious Name Amen and Amen.
