These verses picture God as a shelter and a rescuer who acts from heaven to protect and vindicate. David’s language, crying to God Most High, lying among lions, and calling for God’s exaltation, captures both danger and trust. The tension between threat and refuge invites us to name where we feel exposed and to remember that God’s mercy and truth reach into the most frightening places.
I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth. My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth. Psalms 57:2-5
When life feels like a field of teeth and arrows, lift your cry to the God who sends mercy from heaven. Let the image of God’s shelter steady your heart; even amid danger, God’s glory can be raised above the earth and bring peace to the soul.
Father God, You are Most High and the refuge of our souls. In times when we lie among lions and feel surrounded by sharp words and danger, send forth Your mercy and truth. Lift our hearts from fear to trust, and let Your glory be our shelter. Give us courage to cry out and the peace to rest in Your protection. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
