Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, when someone won’t stop doing wrong to me, how many times must I forgive them? Seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, you must forgive them more than seven times. You must continue to forgive them even if they do wrong to you seventy-seven times. Matthew 18:21–22 ERV
Peter’s question feels so much like what we would ask when someone does us wrong. How many times do I have to forgive? Jesus’ answer stretches our hearts beyond comfort. Forgiveness isn’t about keeping score; it’s about keeping our hearts free. When we refuse to forgive, the weight of the offense becomes our burden. Jesus calls us to a forgiveness that mirrors His own, persistent, generous, and rooted in grace. This kind of forgiveness doesn’t ignore hurt; it releases it into God’s hands so healing can begin. A person who knows they have done wrong need to repent and make things right. Especially if their wrong is done to others. If they don’t the bad choices they bring upon themselves in much punishment between them and God.
Dear Blessed Lord Jesus, soften my heart when forgiveness feels hard. Help me release bitterness and extend grace as You have given it to me. Teach me to forgive freely, trusting You to heal what hurts. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Your Mighty Precious Name Jesus Amen.
