You who are children, obey your parents. Because you belong to the Lord, that is the right thing to do. God’s Law says: ‘Always respect your father and your mother.’ That is the first rule of God’s Law that also has a promise. The promise is this: ‘As a result, you will be happy and you will live for a long time on the earth.’ Fathers, do not do things that make your children angry. Instead, teach them carefully as they grow up. Help them to understand the message of the Lord and help them to obey it.
Ephesians 6:1–4 Easy:
This passage offers one of the clearest and most balanced teachings in Scripture about the relationship between children and parents. It holds two truths together: children are called to honor, and parents are called to nurture without provoking. When Paul says, “Children, obey your parents,” he roots it in identity, “because you belong to the Lord.” Obedience isn’t about control, but about learning God’s order, safety, and wisdom within the home. When he says, “Honor your father and mother,” he reminds them this command comes with a promise: happiness and a long life. Honor builds stability, peace, and blessing, both spiritually and practically. A child who learns respect, humility, and responsibility early is better prepared for adulthood. The call, “Fathers, do not provoke your children,” balances the command. In Paul’s time, fathers especially were warned not to crush a child’s spirit with harshness, ridicule, or anger. Instead, they should teach with care, guide patiently, and shape hearts with the Lord’s truth, discipleship, not domination. This matters today because honor, respect, and guidance shape how children grow. When raised in God’s house, children thrive. Respect grows where God’s Word is planted. Parents have authority but also the responsibility to lead gently. A home built on honor becomes a place of blessing, where God protects both child and parent.

Father God, praise You and thank You for the years we’ve had to teach and guide our children. As they grow and begin to make choices on their own, remind them of what is good and true. Let the lessons of love, respect, and faith take root deep in their hearts. Protect them from harm and draw them back to You when they wander. May their decisions reflect the wisdom they’ve been taught and the grace You’ve given. Love You, thank You, praise You and give You all the honor and glory in Jesus Precious Name Amen.
