“Sore Ballet Toes”

Psalm 149:3 – “Let them praise His name with dancing; let them sing praises to Him with timbrel and lyre.”

Psalm 150:4 – “Praise Him with timbrel and dancing; praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe.”

Ecclesiastes 3:4 – “A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance.”

2 Samuel 6:14 – “And David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, and David was wearing a linen ephod.”

Music and dance are not sinful but are ways to celebrate and honor God. If someone claims otherwise, you can point them to scripture! The Bible actually encourages singing, dancing, and playing instruments as expressions of joy and worship. The Ten Commandments focus on moral laws and relationships with God and others, but they don’t forbid music or dance. Instead, passages highlight them as ways to praise and glorify God, such as David dancing before the Lord (2 Samuel 6:14) or the Psalms promoting music in worship. Singing and dancing have also been shown to have powerful healing effects on the body and mind. Studies indicate that singing can reduce stress, boost the immune system, and increase pain tolerance through the release of endorphins. Similarly, dancing enhances mental health, reduces anxiety, and improves overall well-being through movement and social connection.

As a garment intricately crafted with symbolism, the ephod embodies the sacred responsibilities associated with approaching the divine. It not only reflects the spiritual heritage of ancient Israel but also informs contemporary believers of their identity and calling. So the next time someone says it’s a sin to sing, dance, and play musical instruments, just tell them, “Carry on, sinner!”
