El Elyon is a Hebrew name for God meaning the Most-High God or the strongest strong One.
It is used in 28 scriptures in the Hebrew Bible, mostly in poetic passages and Psalms, to express God’s supremacy and sovereignty. The first use of this name is in {Genesis 14:17-20 NIV: After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.”} Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything., when Abraham met Melchizedek, the king-priest of Salem, who blessed him as the possessor of heaven and earth. This name teaches us that God is the one true, most powerful God, who can split the sea, calm the storm, and deliver us from our enemies. It also reminds us that God deserves our worship and obedience, and that we should have no other gods before him, whether they are idols, money, or success. El Elyon is the God who longs to be known by us, and who has revealed himself to us through his Word and his Son, Jesus Christ. It reads in Isaiah 14:13-14 NIV: You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens. I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most-High.”
