One of the notable themes of the Bible is the doctrine of the “remnant,” the part of the people who God reserves {Jeremiah 5:18 “Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.”} Only what remained of the people after the devastation of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. was able to return 70 years later. But it was foretold that there would be a remnant to return {Jeremiah 46:28 “Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.”}
